Alex leans against the elevator wall and stares at me. I can feel the heat of it a few feet away. As he crosses the space in a few quick paces, I’m caught so off guard that I back up, allowing him to cage me in against the wall. His eyes lock with mine as he gets to the place inside himself where desire demands possession. His hands travel down my arms, and he tightly takes hold of my wrists. Lifting them above my head, power emanates taughtly through his biceps as he pins me in place.

I feel the pressure of his body against mine with every rise and fall of my chest. When our lips meet, my body awakens with deep sensual desires. I completely lose track of my environment until the bell signals our floor and the elevator stops.

Alex turns to exit, still holding firmly onto one of my wrists. When he loosens his grip and takes my hand, I look up at him, feeling disoriented as we walk down the hall.

A ghost of a smile appears on his lips. “I want to make sure you know how I feel and what I want this time.”

“Message received.” I fan my face and hope my colour has faded as we reach my mom’s room. It’s a relief to find her sitting up and eating on her own. “Hey! Look at you! You must be feeling better.”

Her hand trembles slightly, but she gets food into her mouth. “I’d feel better if this food was edible. I wouldn’t feed this stuff to my cats.”

I furrow my brow. “You don’t have cats.”

She places the spoon down on the tray. “Well, if I did, I’d feed them better than this.”

Alex chuckles, and only then does she realize he’s with me. Her face brightens up, and she reaches out her hand. “Alex! It’s so nice to see you. If I knew you were coming, I would have freshened up.” She looks at me with a look of annoyance. “Honestly, I must look a fright.”

Alex takes her hand and leans in to press a gentle kiss on the top of her head. “You always look beautiful to me, so don’t even give it a second thought.”

She giggles like a schoolgirl. “Maya, if you don’t seal the deal soon, I might just date him myself.”

I’m horrified.

“I’m not entirely sure I can handle you,” he says with a wink.

Kill me now. “Has the doctor been in?”

“Yes, early this morning. He said I’m stable, and there’s no reason for me to stay here.”

“That’s wonderful news! When can I take you home?”

“I’m not going home.”

“Well, of course not right away. You can come and stay with Jack and me. I’ll throw Kevin out of the spare room.”

“No, I’m not going to stay with you.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t stay on your own. You’re not strong enough.”

“Exactly.”

“I’m confused.”

“You’re not listening, Maya. I’m not going home. Yours or mine. The time has come.” She reaches for something on the table in front of her.
